According to the American Psychology Association, 36.4 percent of college students suffer from depression. https://www.apa.org/monitor/2013/06/college-students

Okay, you read my last post and you realize you are suffering from depression. But you’re not sure exactly what is causing it. Well, there could be multiple factors that can lead to depression. School, work, life at home, not enough sleep, breakups, etc. With my post today, I hope that I can help you figure out what in your life is causing you to have depression. This way, it will be easier to relieve yourself of that depression. Let’s get started shall we?
What is causing your depression…?
- Unfortunately, one of the most common causes of depression is, heartbreak. You go into college happy as can be with your partner, but one day you guys break up. You lay in your bed over thinking, losing sleep, not concentrating at school. Thinking of ways to win them back. Suddenly you fall into a pit where you can’t get out of your sadness and that is depression.
- Which leads me to the next cause. Loss of sleep. You stay up night playing video games. Or working on assignments for school. Or overthinking things about your life. Going to sleep at 3 a.m. knowing you got school at 7 a.m. Now suddenly you can’t stay awake in class since you have no energy and you fall behind and your grades drop.
- Which then leads me to my next point. A pileup of multiple assignments with little time to finish them. You become stressed. Anxiety builds up inside of you, thinking whether or not to drop out because you can’t deal with the pressure of having to do all this work. You stay up late trying to finish everything just to start the cycle all over again the next day.
- You noticing a pattern yet?
- On top of that you have work in the morning! Or right after school. You now have no time for your social life since you work and then go straight home to finish all your piled up homework.
- Your friends start to distance themselves because you don’t have time for them and they can’t understand why. You feel lonely and fall into depression.

Okay okay, that was a lot to digest. Basically everything is somehow connected and intertwined. One thing leads to the other and eventually making you fall into depression. Of course there are a couple of things that I left out that would make this blog post really long. Like financial problems, personal problems at home, anxiety, drugs and medication, genes, and many other factors. I have included this video that gives a few more examples.
This video also mentions ways to treat depression, but I will cover more on that on my next blog post. Feel free to comment ways that you know how to deal with depression. Hope you enjoyed! 🙂
